At the Town Council's meeting on Wednesday 25th February 2026, Councillors formalised their intention to work with key stakeholders and partners in submitting an Expression of Interest for selection into the UK Government's Town of Culture 2028 competition.

The process will see a structured Expression of Interest application being submitted for initial consideration.

Those town's which are successful at this stage, will win through to the second round where funding of £60,000 is provided to each entrant to prepare and submit an enhanced bid.
