Lytham Town Council publishes new A-Board guidance to support businesses and accessible streets
10th of March, 2026
Lytham Town Council has published a new A-Board / Advertising Board Policy to support local businesses while helping to keep the town’s pavements safe and accessible for everyone.
The guidance has been developed with a positive and collaborative approach in mind, recognising the important role that A-boards play in helping independent businesses attract customers and create a vibrant high street.
Lytham is fortunate to have a thriving community of responsive and responsible businesses, and the Town Council is keen to continue working constructively with them to maintain the welcoming character of the town centre.
At the same time, the policy reflects the need to ensure that pavements remain accessible for all members of the public. This includes people with impaired vision or mobility, as well as those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams or pushchairs.
Keeping clear pedestrian routes helps ensure that everyone can move safely and comfortably through the town centre, supporting residents, business and visitors to our town alike.
The Council also recognises that managing pavement space can sometimes be challenging in a historic town centre like Lytham, where trees, planters and street furniture already share the available space along our streets.
Clifton Street in particular has long been known as a traditional shopping promenade where people stroll, browse and enjoy the town centre environment. The street takes its name from the influential Clifton family whose estate shaped much of Lytham’s development, and the area has been a focal point for shopping and social life since the 19th century.
Today the tree-lined street remains one of the defining features of the town centre and helps create the distinctive character that residents and visitors value so highly.
The new policy aims to strike a sensible balance between supporting local businesses and ensuring that public footways remain clear and safe.
It is also important to note that Lytham Town Council does not have enforcement powers in relation to A-boards. Instead, the Council’s role is to provide helpful guidance and to encourage good practice across the town.
By working together with businesses and the wider community, the aim is to maintain the welcoming, accessible and attractive town centre that Lytham is known for.
The Town Council would like to thank local businesses for their continued cooperation and for the vital role they play in keeping Lytham a lively and successful place to shop, visit and spend time.
